Vortex is Berland Technologies’ new integrated information management and decision support system for investment management firms. Vortex was developed for a large institutional investment manager. The client came to us because they needed a system that would provide them a flexible framework for analysis, portfolio decisions and client reporting- using the specialized investment data and analytical programs they already had. An additional requirement was to incorporate their existing decision methodologies into the software. None of their current systems was capable of doing what they wanted, nor did anything exist in the vast software marketplace.
We
designed Vortex
to
integrate all this specialized data and number-crunching power to support key
aspects of their investment decision making process. From the start, the system
has been designed to support virtually any information source and type of
information-
from portfolio accounting data to real time market information to news and
analysis. The system also manages the information flow to and from external and
internal analytical systems.
Once decisions are made, Vortex routes trading instructions (even across multiple accounts) to your trading desk for execution, monitors pending orders, and allocates executed trades to client accounts. Portfolio managers can assure real-time compliance with investment guidelines on an account-by-account basis. Completed and allocated trades can then be routed directly to the portfolio accounting system.
To support effective investment decision making;
To support the investment process from idea generation through inventory to execution and on to record-keeping;
To maximize the effectiveness of the investment professional.
The same approach to information integration allows Vortex to be an ideal conduit for communication with clients and the marketplace. Effective communication often transcends traditional accounting and performance data. Clients increasingly want to know about the process behind the numbers. Vortex allows useful, timely information to be collected, summarized and presented in a manner that is truly informative.
True multi-currency capabilities: Each asset is associated with a base currency, and positions can be restated in any common currency.
Multi-security
package definition & tracking:
Where certain portfolio positions are composed of a number of related
securities (for example, option overwrites), the multiple-security package
can be summarized and measured as if it were a single security.
Archiving
of historical data:
The
system can be configured to store historical data based on client
requirements. It can, for example, maintain the last sixty trading days of
daily data, and all month-end data.
Calculation
of equivalent positions:
Synthetic and derivative positions can be restated into equivalent
quantities of their underlying assets. This supports many risk management
and client reporting functions.
Flexible
reporting: Reports
can be programmed for automatic generation by the system, or can be designed
using Crystal Reports, which is delivered as part of the system.
Flexible
data integration: Information
sources can be added and changed. New data from existing sources can be
added to the system.
We configure the system so that it supports your investment process. You are not forced to change the way you do business to accommodate new software. We developed Vortex according to certain principles that are reflected in the software.
Vortex is built using the latest client-server architecture. It is based on Microsoft NT Technology and operates under Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. The database architecture is SQL 2000. The system is scalable, and can be used in either a client-server mode or with a browser front end for access over the Internet.
